Undergraduate Scholarship Information

Each year the Political Science Department awards several scholarships to undergraduate students.  Our department also administers the prestigious Robert Dean Bass Memorial Scholarship.  In addition, 2-3 undergraduates are nominated by faculty members for paper awards given out for exceptional papers written in political science courses.  Information and eligibility criteria can be found in the "Scholarships" section below.

Once you login to the scholarship website, there are two separate links: one for Political Science Department scholarships, which include the Benson Scholarship, Leek Scholarship, Saxe Award, Sullivan Scholarship, Peters Scholarship, Youngwirth Scholarship, and Ramirez/Massa Scholarship. And one for the Robert Dean Bass Memorial Scholarship. You have the option to apply for only PSC scholarships, only the Bass Scholarship, or all scholarships (please note eligibility criteria below to ensure you qualify for the scholarships you are applying for).

Robert Dean Bass Memorial Scholarships

Number Given: 4 - 10 | Amount: $250 - $2,500
 Application Deadline: February 1, 2017

The Department of Political Science is responsible for the administration of the College of Arts and Sciences Robert Dean Bass Memorial Scholarship Program. The Bass scholarships are merit scholarships for which undergraduate students in Economics and Political Science are eligible. Students must have a minimum 3.65 GPA, at least 40 hours completed in residence at OU (excludes AP, ASE, CLEP hours), and no more than 90 total hours completed (includes AP, ASE, CLEP hours).

June and Oliver Benson Memorial Scholarship

Number Given: 1 | Amount: $200 - $500
 Application Deadline:February 1, 2017

The Benson scholarship is a merit scholarship for Political Science and Public Affairs and Administration majors. To be eligible, students must have at least twelve hours in political science major credit at OU, including at least six completed hours, and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

John Halvor Leek Memorial Scholarships

 Application Deadline: February 1, 2017

The Leek scholarships are merit scholarships for undergraduate Political Science and Public Affairs and Administration majors and for Political Science, Public Administration, and Congressional Studies students at the graduate level. To be eligible, undergraduate students must have at least twelve hours in political science major credit at OU, including at least six completed hours, and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Graduate students must have a minimum 3.50 in the graduate work in political science.

Allan Saxe Award

Number Given: 1 | Amount: $500 - $750
 Application Deadline: February 1, 2017

The Saxe award is for Political Science and Public Affairs and Administration majors. The award is based on both merit and need. To be eligible, students must have at least twelve hours in political science major credit at OU, including at least six completed hours, and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Kelly Sullivan Memorial Scholarship

Number Given: 1 | Amount: $200 - $450
 Application Deadline:February 1, 2017

The Kelly Sullivan scholarship is a merit scholarship for Political Science and Public Affairs and Administration majors. To be eligible, students must have at least twelve hours in political science major credit at OU, including at least six completed hours, and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Joyce and Edmond Peters Scholarship

Number Given: 1 | Amount: $1,000
 Application Deadline: February 1, 2017

The Peters Scholarship is a merit scholarship for students in the department's Public Administration programs. Full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are Oklahoma residents are eligible. Preference is given to students who graduated from either Blackwell High School or Edmond High School. The award is based on grade point average, letters of recommendation, career accomplishments, or other evidence of academic promise.

Mike Youngwirth Public Administration Scholarship

The Youngwirth Scholarship is a merit scholarship for Political Science or Public Affairs and Administration majors. To be eligible, students must be juniors or seniors that have at least twelve hours in political science major credit at OU, including at least six completed hours, and a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA. Students must be involved in at least one recognized student organization and will be required to submit a letter from the sponsor of the organization indicating their level of involvement.

Teresa Ramirez and Richard W. Massa Scholarship

The Ramirez/Massa Scholarship is a merit and need-based scholarship for Political Science majors. To be eligible, students must have at least twelve hours in political science major credit at OU, including at least six completed hours, and a minimum 2.25 cumulative GPA. Students must have demonstrated financial need and priority consideration will be given to minority, female, or non-traditional students (age 24 or older) who are first generation college students.

Chris A. deJong Award

Number given: 1 | Amount: $400
 Application Deadline: Nomination Only

This award is for students majoring in Political Science. The student must have at least a 3.00 overall grade point average. Selection criteria shall include a demonstrated extraordinary love of learning, either (1) by efforts to pursue an education that rises far above the efforts made by typical students, or (2) by overcoming obstacles and challenges that make it more difficult for the student to achieve his or her educational goals. Students are nominated by faculty.

 

Paper Awards

Benson Undergraduate Paper Award

Number Given: 1 | Amount: $100
 Application Deadline: Nomination Only

Each year, the Benson Award honors the best research paper done by an undergraduate Political Science or Public Affairs and Administration major or minor. The winner receives a cash award. Nominations for the award are made by faculty members.

Joseph Crim Pray Paper Award

Number Given: 1 | Amount: $100
Application Deadline: Nomination Only

The Pray Award honors the best sophomore-level paper written by an undergraduate Political Science or Public Affairs and Administration major or minor for a 2000-level "gateway" course. The winner receives a cash award. Nominations for the award are made by faculty members.

John W. Wood Award

Number Given: 1 | Amount: $100
Application Deadline: Nomination Only

This award is given to the best graduate or undergraduate paper, thesis, or dissertation in the field of American Political Theory, Political Leadership, or the Presidency. Research and writing will comply with accepted academic standards, department, and university policies. Undergraduate work may include either a single paper or a series of papers amounting to 10 to 20 pages. A more lengthy work would be expected for graduate theses or dissertations. The Wood Award may be given for a paper or series of papers written for a course, for a master's thesis, or a doctoral dissertation.
